Hindi → Marathi bridges

  • कितने बजे हैं → किती वाजले — Vājle is the past form of vājṇe (to strike/ring).
  • मुझे मदद चाहिए → मला मदत हवी आहे — Malā havī āhe equals malā pāhije (I need).
  • आप कहाँ रहते हो → तुम्ही कुठे राहता — Rāhatā is the present form of rāhaṇe (to live).
  • मुझे भूख लगी है → मला भूक लागली आहे — Lāglī is feminine because bhūk is feminine.
  • चिंता मत करो → काळजी करू नका — Karū nakā is the respectful negative imperative.
  • मुझे मराठी आती है → मला मराठी येते — Yete is from yeṇe (to come); knowledge comes to you.

Grammar notes

Daily Routine Pattern

किती वाजले? (कितने बजे हैं?), वेळ काय आहे? (समय क्या है?) — वेळ विचारायचे दोन मार्ग. मी आता येतो (मैं अभी आता हूँ), शुभ रात्री (शुभ रात्रि) ही रोजची वाक्ये.

Two ways to ask the time: kitī vājle? and veḷ kāy āhe? both mean what time is it. Mī ātā yeto = I am coming right now; śubha rātrī = good night.

Polite Requests

थोडं थांबा (थोड़ा रुको), मोठ्याने बोला (ज़ोर से बोलो), लक्ष द्या (ध्यान दो) — शेवटचा 'ा' आदर दाखवतो. मला मदत हवी आहे (मुझे मदद चाहिए) ही नम्र मागणी.

Polite imperatives end in -ā: thāmbā (please wait), bolā (please speak), dyā (please give). Malā madat havī āhe = I need help, the soft way to ask.

Travel Phrases

तुम्ही कुठे राहता? (आप कहाँ रहते हो?), गर्दी आहे (भीड़ है), लवकर या (जल्दी आओ), पुन्हा भेटू (फिर मिलेंगे) — प्रवासातली 4 कामाची वाक्ये.

Tumhī kuṭhe rāhatā? = where do you live (respectful). Gardī āhe = it is crowded. Lavkar yā = come soon. Punhā bheṭū = see you again.

Food Phrases

मला भूक लागली आहे (मुझे भूख लगी है), मला तहान लागली आहे (मुझे प्यास लगी है), चव छान आहे (स्वाद अच्छा है), मला आवडलं (मुझे पसंद आया).

Malā bhūk/tahān lāglī āhe = I am hungry/thirsty (literally: to me hunger/thirst has attached). Cav chān āhe = the taste is nice. Malā āvaḍlaṁ = I liked it.

Feelings Phrases

काळजी करू नका (चिंता मत करो), परत सांगा (फिर से कहो), मी विसरलो (मैं भूल गया), बरं झालं (अच्छा हुआ) — भावना सांगणारी वाक्ये.

Kāḷjī karū nakā = don't worry. Parat sāṅgā = say again. Mī visaralo = I forgot (masculine speaker). Baraṁ jhālaṁ = good, that's good.

Revision Pattern

माझं नाव ... आहे (मेरा नाम ... है), मला मराठी येते (मुझे मराठी आती है), उद्या भेटू (कल मिलेंगे), अभिनंदन (बधाई हो) — ओळख + निरोप + अभिनंदन.

Mājhaṁ nāv ... āhe = my name is ... Malā marāṭhī yete = I know Marathi (literally: to me Marathi comes). Udyā bheṭū = see you tomorrow. Abhinandan = congratulations.

Culture notes

  • Asking the Time — You can ask kitī vājle? to anyone on the street. Answers use vājle: don vājle (2 o'clock), sāḍhetīn vājle (3:30).
  • Polite Requests — Say malā madat havī āhe (I need help) instead of barking orders. Moṭhyāne bolā requests speaking loudly, politely.
  • Travel Manners — Use tumhī (respectful you) with strangers, not tū. Gardī āhe is the classic Mumbai-local sentence.
  • Praising Food — Cav chān āhe and malā āvaḍlaṁ delight any host. Say them generously at meals.
  • Consoling Others — Kāḷjī karū nakā consoles; baraṁ jhālaṁ celebrates. Both keep conversations warm.
  • Meeting and Parting — Introduce with mājhaṁ nāv, part with punhā/udyā bheṭū, celebrate with abhinandan - the full social loop.
