Hindi → Marathi bridges

  • मेरी मौसी पुणे में रहती हैं → माझी मावशी पुण्यात राहतात — Māvśī = mother's sister. Mājhā (masc. sing.) / mājhe (pl.) agree with the noun.
  • आज बहुत ओले पड़ रहे हैं → आज खूप गारा पडत आहे — Gārā paḍat āhe = it is hailing. Khūp = very, placed before the verb phrase.
  • तुम किस लिए जा रहे हो → तू कशासाठी जातोस — Kaśāsāṭhī = what for. Jātos = you go (informal); jātā = formal.
  • इस सब्ज़ी का बिल कितना है → या भाजीचे बिल किती — Bil = bill. Kitī = how much. Cī links feminine noun: bhājīce bil.
  • मुझे एक संदेश भेजो → मला एक संदेश पाठव — Malā = to me. Pāṭhav = send (imperative). Object + verb at end.
  • क्या मेरा उत्तर सही है → माझं उत्तर बरोबर आहे का — Kā at sentence end turns a statement into a yes/no question. Barobar = correct.

Grammar notes

Extended Family

विस्तारित परिवार: मावशी (आईची बहीण), मामा (आईचा भाऊ), आत्या (वडिलांची बहीण). माझी मावशी, माझी आत्या — विशेषण नामाप्रमाणे बदलते.

Weather and Seasons

हवामान: आज ऊन आहे, गारा पडत आहे, थंडी आहे. ऋतू — दमट, पावसाळा, कोरडे. सरी आली, वावटळ पडलं.

Weather phrases: āj ūn āhe (it is sunny), gārā paḍat āhe (it is hailing), thaṇḍī āhe (it is cold). Seasons: damaṭ (humid), pāvsāḷā (monsoon), koraḍe (dry).

Koṇtā (which), kuṭhlā (which one), kaśāsāṭhī (what for), kevhā (when), kasaṁ (how), kā (why), kitī (how much). Question word comes first: tū kaśāsāṭhī jātos (what for are you going)?

Technology

आधुनिक शब्द: मोबाईल, संगणक, इंटरनेट, संदेश, ॲप. मला संदेश पाठव, ॲप वापर, इंटरनेट चालू कर. करणे हे क्रियापद जोडतात.

Modern words: mobāīl, saṁgaṇak, iṁṭarneṭ, saṁdeś, ăp. Malā saṁdeś pāṭhav (send me a message), ăp vāpar (use the app). Borrowed nouns pair with karaṇe (to do).

Quiz Revision

उजळणी: प्रश्नमंजुषा सोडवा — उत्तर निवडा, गुण मोजा. मी कोणता आहे? गारा केव्हा पडतो? बिल किती? सर्व धडे एकत्र आठवा.

Revision: solve the quiz - pick the answer (uttar), count the marks (guṇ). Mī koṇtā āhe (which am I)? Gārā kevhā paḍto (when does hail fall)? Bil kitī (what bill)? Recall all lessons together.

Culture notes

  • Joint Family — Maharashtra traditionally had joint families - aunts and grandparents under one roof. Cities now have nuclear families, but festivals bring everyone together.
  • Three Seasons and Monsoon — Maharashtra has three seasons - humid (March-May), monsoon (June-September), dry (Nov-Feb). Konkan gets very heavy hail and farming depends on the monsoon.
  • Questions and Politeness — Politeness matters when asking questions -aho for strangers, tumhī for elders, tū only for friends. Start with māph karā (excuse me) or kṛpayā (please).
  • Market and Bank — Light bargaining is normal in markets - say thodaṁ kamī karā politely. Banks offer Marathi forms for opening accounts (khāte), loans (karja) and interest (vyāj).
  • Mobile Age — Mobile phones and the internet have reached everywhere in Maharashtra. Messaging in Marathi and using apps is common - young people mix Marathi and English.
  • Importance of Revision — Regular revision matters when learning Marathi. Solving quizzes, counting marks and correcting mistakes builds confidence. Welcome!
