Hindi → Marathi bridges

  • नमस्ते → नमस्कार — नमस्कार is used anytime.
  • मेरा नाम → माझं नाव — नाव = name.
  • तुम कैसे हो → तू कसा आहेस — कसा masc, कशी fem.
  • मैं खा रहा हूँ → मी खातो आहे — Continuous = verb+तो + आहे.
  • मुझे चाहिए → मला पाहिजे — मला पाहिजे = I need.
  • वह चावल खाता है → तो भात खातो — भात = rice.

Grammar notes

Vowels

अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ, अं, अः ही मराठीची 12 स्वरे आहेत.

Marathi has 12 vowels: a, ā, i, ī, u, ū, e, ai, o, au, plus the nasal aṃ and the breathy aḥ. Vowel length changes meaning, so hold long vowels fully.

Consonants

क ते ह ही 33 व्यंजने आहेत. ळ हा मराठीचा अद्वितीय व्यंजन आहे.

Marathi has 33 consonants, from ka to ha. ḷa is the retroflex L unique to Marathi among Indian languages - practice curling the tongue tip back.

Greetings

नमस्कार (सर्वांसाठी), नमस्ते, गुड मॉर्निंग म्हणून नमस्कार.

Namaskār suits everyone at any time of day; namastē is a close alternative. There is no separate good-morning formula - namaskār covers it.

मी

मी राहुल आहे. माझं नाव राहुल आहे.

Mī Rāhul āhe and mājhē nāv Rāhul āhe both mean I am Rahul / my name is Rahul. Notice: āhe (am) comes at the very end of the sentence.

Verbs

खाणे, पिणे, जाणे, येणे, करणे.

Core verbs take the infinitive -ṇe: khāṇe (eat), piṇe (drink), jāṇe (go), yeṇe (come), karaṇe (do).

Word Order

कर्ता + कर्म + क्रियापद (SOV). मी भात खातो.

Marathi word order is Subject + Object + Verb: mī bhāt khāto literally reads I rice eat. The verb always comes last.

  • Shiv Jayanti — Shivaji Maharaj's birth anniversary.
  • Ganesh Festival — 10-day Ganesh festival.
  • Respect for Elders — Respecting elders is crucial.
  • Saree Tradition — Nauvari saree is the traditional Maharashtrian attire.
  • Marathi Poetry — Abhanga, Ovi, Geet are rich poetry forms.
