Word meaning
हा, ही, हे — Saying “This” in Marathi Correctly
Marathi has three words for this: हा (masculine), ही (feminine), हे (neuter). The simple gender rule, plus इथे/तिथे and असा/तसा.
The short answer
Marathi splits "this" by gender:हा for masculine nouns,ही for feminine,हे for neuter. Same word, three uniforms — the noun decides which one it wears.
The pointer words
These seven are the navigation system of Marathi sentences: the three "this" forms, the here/there pair (इथे/ तिथे) and the like-this/like-that pair (असा /तसा).
| Marathi | Pronunciation | Hindi | English | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| हा | hāhaa | यह | this (masculine) | हा मुलगा हुशार आहे. This boy is smart. |
| ही | hīhee | यह | this (feminine) | ही मुलगी गाते. This girl sings. |
| हे | hehe | यह | this (neuter) | हे पुस्तक वाच. Read this book. |
| इथे | itheithe | यहाँ | here | इथे बैस. Sit here. |
| तिथे | tithetithe | वहाँ | there | तिथे जाऊ नकोस. Do not go there. |
| असा | asāasaa | ऐसा | like this | असा प्रश्न विचार. Ask such a question. |
| तसा | tasātasaa | वैसा | like that | तसा माणूस भेटणार नाही. You will not meet such a man. |
The pattern that repeats everywhere
Once the हा/ही/हे habit clicks, relatives fall in line for free:माझा/माझी(my, masculine/feminine) follow the same agreement, and so do almost all adjectives. If you are coming from Hindi, this feels familiar — the feminine differs from Hindi in places, though, so trust the gendered tables over guesswork.
