Marathi Possessive Pronouns (माझा, माझी, माझं)
My, your, his in Marathi: माझा/माझी/माझं agree with the owned noun's gender — with curriculum examples and Hindi comparison.
What you will learn
Marathi has three genders — masculine, feminine and neuter — and possessives agree with the thing owned, not the owner: माझा भाऊ (my brother), माझी बहीण (my sister), माझं पुस्तक (my book). The notes below come from Unit 02's possession lesson and Unit 03's adjective-agreement lesson.
Hindi speakers already know agreement (मेरा/मेरी); the new work is the third gender. नाव, पुस्तक, कुटुंब, पाणी are all neuter and take माझं.
Tip: Learn every new noun together with its possessive: माझं पुस्तक, माझी बहीण — gender comes free that way.
The three-way split
माझा for masculine nouns, माझी for feminine, माझं for neuter. The curriculum sentences make it concrete: हे माझं पुस्तक आहे (this is my book — neuter), ही माझी बहीण आहे (this is my sister — feminine), माझं कुटुंब मोठं आहे (my family is big — neuter again).
Unit 03's adjective-agreement note extends the same logic to describing words — once possessives agree, adjectives follow the same three genders.
Common mistakes
✗ माझा नाव for “my name”✓ माझं नाव — नाव is neuter
Hindi मेरा नाम misleads: Marathi नाव takes the neuter possessive.
✗ Agreement with the owner instead of the noun✓ A woman says माझा भाऊ too — the brother is masculine
The possessive matches the owned thing's gender, not the speaker's — same logic as Hindi, one more gender.
