How to Say "I Love You" in Marathi: प्रेम vs आवडते

Marathi has two distinct registers for "love" — प्रेम (prem, deep/committed love) and आवडते (āvaḍte, like/fancy/attraction). Using the wrong one is the #1 cultural mistake. This guide covers both, the grammar, and the phrases you will actually hear.

Quick Answer

ContextMarathiLiteralRegister

Parents / elders / Godमी तुझ्यावर प्रेम करतोI do love on youReverent
Dating / crush / "I like you"मला तुझी आवडतेYou please meCasual / dating
Friend appreciationतू माझा छान मित्र आहेसYou are my good friendPlatonic

Grammar: Two Constructions

1. प्रेम करतो/करते — Transitive "do love"

Tip: The verb agrees with you the speaker, not the object. A woman says प्रेम करते, a man says प्रेम करतो. The object (तुझ्यावर) stays the same.

2. आवडते — Experiencer "pleases me"

Tip: आवडते always takes dative subject (मला, तुला, त्याला). The thing liked is the grammatical subject: मला चहा आवडते (tea pleases me → I like tea), मला तुझी आवडते (you-fem please me → I like you).
