What you will learn

Thirty-two Marathi festival and culture words — the big celebrations (गुढीपाडवा, गणपती, दिवाळी, होळी), the rituals (पूजा, आरती, प्रसाद, उपवास), the arts (रांगोळी, भजन, कीर्तन) and the pilgrimages (यात्रा, वारी). Every entry has Hindi and English meanings, pronunciation and a real example sentence.

Unit 13 sentences like सर्वांना शुभ दिवाळी! and मी गणपतीला भेट देईन show these words in living use. Maharashtra's public गणपती उत्सव is a cultural institution — knowing the vocabulary lets you participate, not just watch.

Tip: गुढीपाडवा is the Marathi New Year (not Diwali) — learn it first; it unlocks the calendar.

Maharashtra-specific celebrations

गुढीपाडवा (Marathi New Year), शिवजयंती (Shivaji Jayanti), वारी (the Pandharpur pilgrimage) — these are distinctly Maharashtrian. The public गणपती उत्सव (ten days, streets full of idols, processions) is unlike any other state's celebration.

Ritual vocabulary that travels

पूजा, आरती, प्रसाद, रांगोळी, तोरण, फराळ, उपवास — these words work across festivals. Learn them once; they repeat every celebration.

Common mistakes

✗ Writing दिवाली instead of दिवाळी✓ दिवाळी (with ळ) is the Marathi spelling

The ळ sound is Marathi's signature; writing दिवाली marks the word as Hindi, not Marathi.

✗ Thinking फराळ means fasting food✓ फराळ = festive snacks eaten DURING fasts (फलाहार)

The word refers to the special treats (पेढे, लाडू, चकली), not the fast itself. The fast is उपवास.

✗ Calling वारी a festival✓ वारी = pilgrimage (to Pandharpur); the festival is आषाढी एकादशी

वारी is the journey; the day is the festival. Pilgrims walk weeks — it is a verb-noun hybrid.
