The “it hurts” pattern
Marathi says माझं डोके दुखते — literally “my head hurts”, with the body part as the subject. So the sentence frame you need is माझं/माझे + body part + दुखते. The same frame extends to symptoms: मला ताप आहे (I have fever), मला खोकला आहे (I have a cough).
For Hindi speakers this is familiar territory: मेरा सिर दुख रहा है maps closely. The Marathi-specific part is which words changed — डोकं for सिर, पोट for पेट, खोकला for खाँसी.
Two-for-one words
पाय covers both leg and foot; बोट covers both finger and toe; हात covers hand and arm. Context disambiguates — and plural बोटं, पाय appear constantly in everyday speech.
Common mistakes
✗ माझ्याकडे ताप आहे for fever✓ मला ताप आहे
Symptoms take the dative मला pattern in the curriculum (मला ताप आहे, खांसीही आहे — Unit 10).
✗ Translating “I have a headache” word for word✓ डोकेदुखी आहे मला, or माझं डोके दुखते
The thing hurts; you don’t “have” the pain — Marathi prefers the body part as subject.
✗ Using औषध and गोळी interchangeably✓ औषध = medicine; गोळी = pill/tablet
औषध जेवणानंतर घ्या (take medicine after food) vs. counting गोळया.
