Marathi Phrases for Talking About Family & People

12 real Marathi sentences for talking about family and people — with Hindi and English meanings and speaking tips from the Bol Marathi curriculum.

12 phrases · Units 03, 05

What you will learn

Twelve complete Marathi sentences from Units 03 and 05 for the most common small-talk subject there is: your family and the people around you. Each phrase carries its Hindi meaning, English meaning and a speaking tip — these are real curriculum sentences, not word-list fragments.

Read each Marathi sentence aloud, compare it with the Hindi column, and notice the pattern: माझं कुटुंब मोठं आहे maps almost word-for-word on मेरा परिवार बड़ा है — but the possessive and the verb ending are where Marathi does its own thing.

Tip: Pick the three sentences that are true about your own family and memorize those first.

What these phrases teach

Two patterns carry most family talk: possession with माझा/माझी/माझं agreeing with the thing owned (माझी बहीण, माझं कुटुंब), and having-family with माझ्याकडे … आहेत (माझ्याकडे पाच भाऊ आहेत — I have five brothers). Hindi speakers know the logic; the endings are the new part.

Unit 05 supplies the people-words and pronouns these phrases point at; Unit 03 supplies the family nouns themselves. Both units are linked below.

Common mistakes

✗ माझा कुटुंब for "my family"✓ माझं कुटुंब — कुटुंब is neuter

Marathi possessives agree with the noun's gender, and Marathi has a neuter gender Hindi lacks.

✗ मेरे पास for "I have (brothers)"✓ माझ्याकडे पाच भाऊ आहेत

Having family/money uses -कडे, not a literal पास translation.
