Marathi Phrases for Directions & Navigation
Marathi directions phrases for asking and giving — where is it, left, right, straight — from Unit 08 and Unit 14 speaking sentences.
What you will learn
Direction phrases from Units 08 and 14: asking where something is, understanding left/right/straight/stop, and giving simple landmark-based directions. Each sentence has Hindi and English meanings plus a speaking tip.
The four navigation words are the core: डावा (left), उजवा (right), सरळ (straight), थांबा (stop). Every direction sentence in Units 08 and 14 builds from these four.
Tip: डावा = left, उजवा = right, सरळ = straight, थांबा = stop. Say them while walking — muscle memory beats flashcards.
The Phrases
Asking where
कुठे आहे? (Where is it?) works for anything — स्टेशन कुठे आहे?, शौचालय कुठे आहे?, होटेल कुठे आहे? The answer will use the four core words: सरळ जा, डावीकडे वळा, उजवीकडे आहे.
Giving directions
सरळ जा (go straight), डावीकडे वळा (turn left), उजवीकडे वळा (turn right), थांबा (stop). Add landmarks: मंदिर उजवीकडे आहे (temple is on the right), बँक डावीकडे आहे (bank is on the left).
Common mistakes
✗ Using बायाँ/दायाँ from Hindi✓ डावा/उजवा — no sound overlap, must learn fresh
Hindi बायाँ/दायाँ and Marathi डावा/उजवा share zero phonetics. This is pure vocabulary learning.
✗ Saying थांब for stop✓ थांबा — the imperative ends in ा
थांब is the root; the spoken command is थांबा (stop!) or थांबा एक मिनिट (wait a minute).
