Grammar notes
SOV with Objects
मी सेव खातो. कर्म क्रियापदपूर्वी येते.
Mī sev khāto means I eat an apple - the object always stands before the verb, unlike English SVO order.
Dative Construction
मला पाणी पाहिजे. मला = dative.
Malā pāṇī pāhije means I want water - literally to-me water is-wanted. Wants, needs and feelings use this dative-subject pattern.
Movement Verbs
जाणे, येणे, फिरणे. मी जातो, मी येतो.
Movement verbs: jāṇe (go), yeṇe (come), phiraṇe (stroll). Examples: mī jāto (I go), mī yeto (I come).
Compound Verbs
सुरू करणे, पूर्ण करणे, प्रयत्न करणे.
Compound verbs with karaṇe (to do): surū karaṇe (to start), pūrṇa karaṇe (to finish), prayatna karaṇe (to try). Loanword nouns attach to karaṇe.
Ability
मी करू शकतो. शकत नाही = cannot.
Mī karū shakto means I can do it. For cannot, use shakat nāhī after the verb stem.
Obligation
मला मराठी शिकावी पाहिजे. सोपे = easy.
Malā Marāṭhī shikāvī pāhije means I must learn Marathi. pāhije after the verb conveys must, should or want.
Culture notes
- Yes/No Nuances — Yes/no registers: ho (yes), nahi (no), hoy (casual yes), nako (no need), nakkhi (definitely).
- Leaf Plate Tradition — Leaf plate dining tradition, eco-friendly.
- Guest is God — Guest is God. Welcome with पधारो.
- मी vs आम्ही — मी individualistic, आम्ही collectivist.
- Importance of Promise — Life may go but promise must not break.
- Politeness Levels — तू -> तुम्ही -> आपण. Verb forms.
