English → Marathi: Greetings & Introductions

Say hello, give your name and ask how someone is -- six real Marathi sentences with English meanings, speaking tips and pronunciation support.

6 sentences · Unit 01

What you will learn

Six complete Marathi sentences from Unit 01 for your first conversations: greeting someone, giving your name, asking how they are, and saying what you need. Each row shows the Marathi, its English meaning, and a speaking tip.

One structural heads-up before the table: Marathi puts the verb at the end. "My name is Rahul" becomes माझं नाव राहुल आहे -- the आहे (is) closes the sentence. Every row below follows that pattern, so after six sentences the order starts feeling normal.

Tip: नमस्कार works at any hour -- mornings add शुभ सकाळ, nights add शुभ रात्री.

English → Marathi, sentence by sentence

Namaste! I am Rahul.
नमस्कार! मी राहुल आहे.
नमस्ते! मैं राहुल हूँ।
नमस्कार = hello/namaste. मी = I.
My name is Rahul.
माझं नाव राहुल आहे.
मेरा नाम राहुल है।
माझं = my. नाव = name.
How are you?
तू कसा आहेस?
तुम कैसे हो?
तू = you. कसा = how (masc).
I am eating.
मी खातो आहे.
मैं खा रहा हूँ।
खातो = eating. आहे = am.
I need water.
मला पाणी पाहिजे.
मुझे पानी चाहिए।
मला = to me. पाहिजे = need.
He eats rice.
तो भात खातो.
वह चावल खाता है।
तो = he. भात = rice.

The verb goes last

English says "I am eating"; Marathi says मी खातो आहे -- literally "I eating am". Read each sentence in the table to its final word; the verb is always waiting there.

The need-pattern is softer than English "I want": मला पाणी पाहिजे is more like "to me, water is needed". Use it freely -- it is polite by default.

Common mistakes

✗ Keeping English word order: "मी आहे तयार"✓ मी तयार आहे -- verb last

Marathi is subject–object–verb; the verb closes every sentence.

✗ Using नमस्ते because you know Hindi✓ नमस्कार

Understood, but नमस्कार is the Marathi greeting -- singles you out as a learner otherwise.
