English → Marathi: Daily Needs & Survival
Ask for water, food, help, the bathroom, and say you are hungry or tired -- Unit 02 survival sentences mapped English to Marathi.
What you will learn
Six survival sentences from Unit 02: asking for water, food, help, the bathroom, and expressing hunger or tiredness. Each maps the English need to the Marathi sentence with a speaking tip.
The grammar lever here is the dative pattern मला ... पाहिजे (to me ... is needed) -- it covers water, food, help, and almost every concrete need.
Tip: मला पाणी पाहिजे, मला चहा पाहिजे, मला मदत पाहिजे -- swap the noun, the frame stays identical. Learn one, you have them all.
English → Marathi, sentence by sentence
The मला ... पाहिजे frame
English "I need X" becomes Marathi मला X पाहिजे -- literally "to me, X is needed". The noun (पाणी, चहा, मदत, शौचालय) slots in; the frame never changes.
Body states use the same logic
Hunger and thirst are also needs: मला भूक लागली आहे (hunger has struck me), मला तहान लागली आहे (thirst has struck me). The verb लागणे (to strike/hit) replaces पाहिजे for body states.
Common mistakes
✗ Saying मी पाणी हवे for "I want water"✓ मला पाणी पाहिजे
हवे is colloquial; पाहिजे is the course standard and works for every need.
✗ Using मला for "I am hungry" as मला भूक आहे✓ मला भूक लागली आहे
Hunger is not a static possession -- it arrives (लागणे). The course teaches the dynamic form.

Common questions
How do you ask for water in Marathi?
मला पाणी पाहिजे -- the universal need sentence. In a hurry, पाणी! also works but the full sentence is polite by default.
Is there a single word for "please"?
कृपया works, but the मला ... पाहिजे frame is already polite -- कृपया is optional.
